Chamoy was invented in Mexico in the 70’s, when Asian immigrants brought their sweet-and-sour apricots and plums with them to Central America. It is now incredibly popular as a topping, condiment, and sauce for all manner of foods throughout central american culture. I got the idea seeing the huge display of Commercial Chamoy at the Walmart in Dublin, but when I checked the ingredients, it was all corn syrup and food dyes. Blech.
We’re making our own from scratch, and you’ll be KICKING yourself if you don’t try this one. We’re using dried apricots, umeboshi (a type of salted plum that has the coolest flavor), fresh mango and lime juice, fresh and dried chiles, fresh garlic, and caramelized onions. Sweet, Salty, Tangy, a little Spicy. It sounds like a lot, but the beautiful marriage of flavors here will put a big smile on your face.
